Burnley have agreed a deal with Brentford for winger Jaidon Anthony, with Fabrizio Romano revealing whether they got their £20 million asking price...

Burnley were always likely to lose players after relegation, with Jaidon Anthony headed back to the Premier League with Brentford.

The Burnley winger has impressed in the last two seasons after his arrival from AFC Bournemouth, with Jaidon Anthony having scored just two and assisted two for Leeds United the season prior to joining Burnley.

Burnley's Zian Flemming has also been eyed by Brentford after scoring 12 goals in 32 games for the Clarets last term. Only one player managed to hit double figures for goal involvements on top of Flemming, with Anthony scoring nine and assisting two in all competitions.

Anthony was signed permanently for Burnley for around £10 million after promotion activated the purchase clause in his loan. He scored eight and assisted seven for Scott Parker in their 100-point Championship season. Naturally, interest has grown in the 26-year-old's services.

It was reported recently that Burnley wanted around £20 million from Brentford for Anthony recently, with Brentford making a formal approach to Burnley to bring the winger back to the Premier League.

There is no denying that Anthony would be a key man for Burnley in the Championship this season as he has already demonstrated what he can do at that level. However, retaining him was never likely to be simple.

The Clarets have been in a strong selling position given that Anthony still has three years remaining on his current deal. That said, it appears Brentford have made a breakthrough in their pursuit.

Fabrizio Romano states Brentford have agreed a deal in principle to sign Anthony from Burnley. He claims it is a fixed fee of £17 million plus £3 million in add-ons. Anthony is to sign a five-year deal at Brentford and the formal steps are to be completed in the coming days.

He will join the likes of Dango Ouattara and Kevin Schade on the flanks for the Bees. The Clarets, meanwhile, have Marcus Edwards, Luca Koleosho, Loum Tchaouna, Mike Tresor, Jaydon Banel, and Jacob Bruun Larsen as their wide options at the time of writing.

Anthony's move to Brentford is unlikely to be the last significant departure from Burnley this summer, with relegation inevitably bringing renewed interest in several of the club's standout performers.

Of course, they would like to keep players like Flemming and Anthony with a proven track record in the second tier, but it is the harsh reality of dropping out of the Premier League. However, this rebuild feels more challenging than previous promotion pushes recently.

Burnley have entered July without a manager in place, creating uncertainty at a time when many of their Championship rivals have already laid solid foundations for the new campaign. The Clarets have also been relatively slow to act in the transfer market, despite knowing significant squad changes were likely.

In a fiercely competitive Championship, clubs cannot afford sluggish starts, either on or off the pitch. Burnley need clarity and decisive recruitment to build momentum quickly. It already looks as though they will not hit the ground running and may find themselves falling behind the promotion pace early on.
