The scenarioThe clear 6-0 home win against 1. FFC Recklinghausen last Sunday, demonstrated that Borussia Dortmund's women's team continue to work meticulously towards their goals. According to Markus Högner, this success was also based on the fact that “we consistently maintained our composure during the game and believed in ourselves. Thanks to good positioning and excellent combinations, we were able to develop many clear attacking moves”. He acknowledged, however, that some unnecessary risk-taking allowed the opposition various counter-attacking opportunities: “This was also part of our video analysis during the week,” reported the coach, who ultimately praised his dominant team and is therefore optimistic about the upcoming matchday.
Personnel matters
During the week, not only Celina Baum, Sara Ito and Marah Tayeh, returned to training, but also captain Paula Reimann (achilles tendonitis), and Markus Högner expects to welcome all four of them back to the squad against Deutz 05. “But we still have to wait and see how Mia Böger is doing. She's suffering from ankle problems after taking a knock to her foot, so it might be a close call for her to be fit by Sunday.”
The opponent
The women's football team from the Cologne district of Deutz currently occupy twelfth place in the Regionalliga West and are battling relegation. Coach Andree Krawietz's team have started 2026 with just one point from their last two matches. The away fixture last September saw the BVB women win 3-0; however, due to a substitution error, the three points they had earned were subsequently revoked. Coach Markus Högner warns for a patient approach: “The aim will be to constantly exploit and employ open spaces during frequent positional changes. These are essential tools when facing a compact team like Deutz. We need to play with confidence and remain focused throughout our actions – that's how we can put the opponent under pressure for 90 minutes and create scoring opportunities.”
Marina Scholz, BVB’s winter signing from 1. FC Nürnberg, brings just such a goal threat to the team: The striker made her competitive debut last weekend and celebrated her first goal against Recklinghausen. The 20-year-old also posed a threat from set pieces, providing further momentum that Markus Högner is delighted about: “That's precisely why we signed Marina Scholz. She complements our performances with good playmaking skills, always finds solutions in tight spaces, and she can deliver the decisive final pass. These are qualities we need in the coming weeks – and, in fact, already this Sunday.”
