Ruben Amorim believes his Manchester United team would have lost at Nottingham Forest last season ‘by more goals’, after the 2-2 draw at the City Ground.
Casemiro’s header gave United the lead but Forest scored twice in quick succession to turn the match on its head, before Amad drew the visitors level with 10 minutes left.
Improving United nearly won it late on but Amorim was satisfied with the result and felt the scoreline would have been very different had the match been played last season.
Amorim was asked whether United would have lost the fixture last season and responded: “Yeah.” He paused before adding: “By more goals [they would have lost]. That is my feeling.”
He continued: “It’s the confidence, of course, it’s completely different. We came from three good games and we have a different confidence. We understand each other better.
“We talk more about this, that football is like this, and we proved it this year. We can have bad moments, but suddenly we have three good games. So football is like that. And the game is like that also.
“We had good moments, we score, you can sense we are in control of the game when the first half finished. We started the second half, we suffer, disconnect for five minutes and that’s enough in the Premier League, but we managed to recover from that, which is a good feeling.”
Going into further detail on the match, Amorim added: “We lost control of the game for five minutes and paid the price. We did some things well. Our level of energy dropped a little bit.
“And when our energy drops a little bit, you can feel it. We can play well, but it’s not full power. But my feeling is that the players tried, really tried. They tried during the week and tried again today.
“In the past, if we had this kind of bad five minutes and we suffer two goals, we didn’t recover. Today is a different feeling and you can sense we could win this game, but we weren’t going to lose, and that’s sometimes the feeling a big team sometimes has.
“We had the opportunity to win in the end, but we drew. We dropped two points. I think last year we suffered a lot. We want to win games and overcome these moments, but now they know how to do it.
“We just need to be inside of the game until the final 10 minutes of the game. That is part of football. In the past, we could have lost everything in the positions and the way we play the game.
“I think we are improving in that aspect. Again, we did some things right, but we also have potential to play so much better, which is the goal.”
