Cameroon’s sports minister Narcisse Mouelle Kombi said in a post on Monday that bonus payments had been authorised for the Indomitable Lions after they reached the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals. The combined qualification and win bonuses amount to 18,180,000 CFA francs, 27,715 euros, per player.

On Sunday night, David Pagou’s side beat South Africa 2-1 to book their place in the last eight.

The minister presented the payout as extra encouragement and motivation for the squad, finishing his message with a celebratory note about a winning Cameroon.

The gesture could be a first step towards easing tensions between the football federation, led by Samuel Eto’o, and the sports ministry.

Their dispute has lasted for more than a year, notably around the appointment and dismissal of former head coach Marc Brys.
