Alessia Russo has shot up the Champions League golden boot standings after a brace against Real Madrid on Wednesday.
The Arsenal forward now tops the standings and could win her first title if her team goes far once more.
= 1. Caroline Weir -4 (Real Madrid)
= 1. Alessia Russo – 4 (Arsenal)
= 1. Lineth Beerensteyn – 4 (Wolfsburg)
= 2. Alexia Putellas – 3 (Barcelona)*
= 2. Alba Redondo – 3 (Real Madrid)
= 2. Ada Hegerberg – 3 (Lyon)
= 2. Fridolina Rolfo – 3 (Manchester United)
= 2. Ella Peddemors – 3 (Wolfsburg)
*still yet to play Champions League matchday four.
After the first four Champions League matchdays this season, only two other players have scored as many goals as Alessia Russo in Europe.
Russo was on two goals in her first three games but she had a huge performance on Wednesday against Real Madrid.
The striker was on top form to carry her team over the line against Madrid, with an important brace getting her side back on track in the Champions League with three points.
Russo praised her England teammate Chloe Kelly after the game for stepping up and creating her match winning goal.
Arsenal’s start to their Champions League defence has been less than ideal, but they have faced four tough teams in the first half of the campaign.
That means that when the Gunners return from international break they will play some easier teams in Europe.
With fixtures against FC Twente and Oud-Heverlee Leuven rounding off the campaign, Russo will be confident she can net a couple more goals before the knockouts begin.
Of course the further Arsenal go in Europe this season, the more chance Russo has of winning the golden boot. The Gunners are currently ninth in the Champions League table and look likely to advance to the next round.
There are a whole host of players lining up to take on Alessia Russo for the Champions League golden boot.
Lineth Beerensteyn has been exceptional for Wolfsburg this season and she also netted a brace on matchday four against Manchester United.
Scotland international Caroline Weir is a surprise at the top of the rankings but the Madrid midfielder has been one of the most consistent players for her team this season.
Although she is still one goal behind Russo, the biggest threat in the golden boot race is arguably Alexia Putellas.
The Barcelona midfielder still has to play Chelsea on matchday four but she is already on three goals this year.
Barca are sure to go far once again in Europe and Putellas would be a safe bet for her second golden boot in the competition.
