The Algeria women's national team delivered a stellar performance on Thursday night, overcoming Cameroon 2-1 at the Miloud-Hadefi Stadium in Oran in the first leg of the final qualifying round for the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations. This crucial victory gives Farid Benstiti's squad a strong shot at qualification, though conceding a goal in the dying moments leaves a hint of frustration.

The Fennecs started the match with intensity and ambition. In the 23rd minute, Ghoutia Karchouni broke the deadlock with a stunning direct free kick. Less than fifteen minutes later, Marine Dafeur doubled the lead with a magnificent curling strike. Dominant in possession and solid at the back, the Algerians capitalized on the sending off of Cameroonian player Claudia Voulania Dabda to further assert their control.

Despite several clear-cut chances, the Greens couldn’t widen the gap further. In the second half, Cameroon, even with a numerical disadvantage, battled until the end. And deep into stoppage time, Nchout Njoya Ajara pulled one back from the penalty spot (90+3), setting up a tense return leg.

Qualification still to be secured

Thanks to this win, Algeria claims its first-ever official victory over Cameroon and takes a slight lead ahead of the second leg scheduled for October 28 in Douala. Benstiti's players will need to show grit and discipline to secure their ticket to CAN 2026, set to take place from March 17 to April 3 in Morocco.

This win also represents a symbolic turning point for the women's team, now rejuvenated under the guidance of the French coach, who appears to have found the right blend of experience and youth.
