Fabio Capello admits he ‘can’t explain’ why Santiago Gimenez can’t score consistently at Milan, while Juventus lack ‘consistency’ and Inter need ‘creativity’ to fight for the Scudetto.

Napoli jumped to the top of the Serie A table on Monday, beating Pisa 3-2 at the Stadio Maradona.

The Partenopei are the defending Serie A champions and are regarded as the favourite to win the title again, especially after signing Kevin De Bruyne and Rasmus Hojlund over the summer.

Capello agreed that Napoli are the best-placed team to lift the title at the end of the season and analysed what their opponents would need to challenge Antonio Conte’s men.

“Milan concede very few goals; they have balance and give away very little in terms of shots. That’s the most important aspect. Allegri has been and will continue to be fundamental. He has solidified the team. Now, they’re only missing a proper striker,” Capello told Gazzetta.

Milan do have a centre-forward in Gimenez, but the Mexico international has yet to score his first goal this season and has been struggling to justify his price tag exceeding €30m since joining the Rossoneri from Feyenoord in January.

“Honestly, I can’t explain. It’s incredible,” Capello admitted.

“In the Netherlands, he always scored. He was decisive in the Champions League last season. He netted over 60 goals in two and a half years in Rotterdam. I don’t think he has forgotten how to score. Plus, he still creates chances. It’s crucial for a striker. The problems arise when you are not able to get a chance.”

Milan have nine points in four games, just one below second-placed Juventus.

“Juventus live on flashes and need one more midfielder,” Capello argued.

“They lack consistency in their play. Tudor obviously needs to find the right balance, but the new signings shouldn’t be written off. They just need a bit of time to settle in and understand Italian football.”

Inter, on the other hand, have two wins and two defeats in the opening four matches.

“For now, you could argue that we’re seeing Inzaghi’s Inter with Chivu on the bench. They plan on instinct, but they are missing a bit of creativity up front. Nobody is capable of dribbling opponents. It’s an old problem from the past,” said Capello, who concluded by saying that Roma could be the underdogs in the race for the title.

“They score and don’t concede. Even if they have a few issues in attack. Dovbyk and Ferguson aren’t top players. The key thing is having rediscovered a player like Pellegrini. Who knows how many times Gasperini spoke to him before starting him? In the end, he won the derby.”
