The Bluebirds have enjoyed a brilliant start to the season following their relegation to League One, with new boss Brian Barry-Murphy getting an instant response from the group.

The 4-0 thrashing of Plymouth means Cardiff sit top of the table at this early stage, having picked up 16 points from six games, with the side yet to taste defeat.

However, it appears they still want to strengthen, as journalist Glen Williams has revealed that Cardiff are ‘keen’ to bring in Kellyman, who is expected to leave Chelsea before the deadline on a temporary basis.

The 19-year-old joined the Blues from Aston Villa last year in a £19m transfer, with the move helping ease Villa’s PSR issues at the time.

Even though he is highly-rated, the England youth international has understandably found it tough to get any game time with Chelsea, so a loan move is likely to be seen as the best next step in his development.

The update adds that there is Championship interest in Kellyman, but Cardiff are seemingly pushing to secure the teenager.

The move however comes with a risk - since his switch to Stamford Bridge last summer, the teenager has suffered from hamstring issues, which limited him to just four under-21's appearances all season - he will therefore need to get up to speed if he is to complete a move to South Wales.

Omari Kellyman could add a lot to Cardiff City’s attack

This would be an exciting signing for Cardiff, as Kellyman is clearly someone who has a lot of talent, but he needs to show that on a consistent basis in the professional game now.

The transfer fee was a talking point when he left Villa, and it will always mean he is under the spotlight, but it’s important to remember he is a young player.

From Cardiff’s perspective, they have had a superb start to life under Barry-Murphy, and there is a lot to like about the club right now, with several academy lads making a big impact on the first-team.

The new boss is trying to create an environment where young, hungry players can flourish, so you would expect Kellyman to be a good fit for Cardiff in that sense.

Even though they have started well, League One is very much a marathon, not a sprint, so further depth would be welcome to Barry-Murphy, who will no doubt be urging the club to back him after this positive first month, as they target promotion back to the Championship at the first attempt.
