Cardiff City have begun life in League One swimmingly
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Cardiff City have quickly emerged as the team to beat during the opening stages of the 2025/26 League One campaign.
The Bluebirds entered the third-tier for the first time in 22 years after suffering a harrowing relegation from the Championship, but have used that as motivation to bounce back in brilliant fashion.
New head coach Brian Barry-Murphy has guided his side to five wins and one draw from their opening six encounters, which sees them sitting top of the pile at this moment in time.
Impressively, the Welsh outfit have conceded just once in that time, scoring 11 goals at the other end of the pitch to dispatch of sides such as Plymouth Argyle and Rotherham United with relative ease.
After all of the negative energy that swirled around the Cardiff City Stadium last term, it seems impossible that anything could interrupt that feeling at this moment in time.
The players are performing, supporters are delighted, and promotion already seems like it could be an extremely realistic possibility for the Bluebirds.
However, some members of the Welsh giants' faithful supporters will still be holding their reservations about the club’s early-season success, having seen how quickly fortunes can change in football - and at Cardiff in particular, of course.
With this in mind, Football League World’s Cardiff City fan pundit, Matt Hall, has highlighted one thing he thinks could disrupt the Bluebirds’ current form.
“I think the main concern, and it's based more on history than it is anything to go off now, is that Vincent Tan will meddle with things in a way that could disrupt the good things that we've got going on,” stated Matt. “We've had good times before and for various reasons, and it's not always his fault, they've often gone wrong around Tan
“My biggest concern at the moment is nothing to do with Brian Barry-Murphy, nothing to do with the playing squad. It's that something above Barry-Murphy goes wrong, it could be something to do with contracts if they mess those up, it could be various things.
“It does feel like there's a very good positive vibe at the moment where nothing could really go wrong. But I think in the back of every Cardiff fan's mind, there's that fear that under this ownership, things tend to have a bad smell somewhere.
“Something bad happens usually at least once a season.”
In the past, Tan has been an extremely controversial figure, most infamously changing the Bluebirds’ home shirt colours from their traditional blue to red in 2012.
Success has come during the 73-year-old’s reign as Cardiff City owner, with two promotions to the Premier League certified highlights.
After Gareth Bale’s interest in fronting a consortium to buy the Welsh outfit became public in the summer, Tan came under increased pressure to finally cash in on Cardiff.
However, the Malaysian businessman stayed firm, requiring increased persuasion to sell.
If results stay positive on the pitch, Cardiff City supporters likely won’t mind who owns their club. But if things begin to turn, fingers will be pointed at Tan immediately.
Therefore, the Bluebirds’ owner will be extremely careful not to meddle in Barry-Murphy’s business and instead back his new manager.
