Cards that ruled Neymar out of Santos v Fla weren't for fouls

Neymar is Santos’ biggest absence for today’s match against Flamengo, valid for the 10th round of the Brazilian Championship.

The star is serving an automatic suspension after receiving his third yellow card in the win over Remo.

The curious detail is that none of the three bookings came from in-game fouls.

Check below the incidents that led to the suspension of Santos’ number 10.

1st card (Round 4 vs Vasco): Still in the first half, Neymar got in defensive midfielder Thiago Mendes’ face. Referee Rafael Rodrigo Klein stopped the match and showed both players a yellow card for “confronting an opponent while play was stopped.”
2nd card (Round 7 vs Internacional): The booking came during the celebration. Neymar climbed onto the fence to celebrate the penalty he scored. On that occasion, Santos ended up losing 2-1.
3rd card (vs Remo): After being hit by Diego Hernández, Neymar went to complain, moving toward his opponent and sparking a brief scuffle. Referee Sávio Pereira Sampaio showed the card for “confronting his opponent” and “acting in a way that showed disrespect for the game.”

Cuca, Santos’ coach, did not hide his frustration at losing his main player and criticized the referee’s strictness in the last incident.

"If you look at the play, he gets a little jab from behind by one, then another from someone else. He went at him, a Remo player came over and leaned into him, in the heat of the moment, I think the referee could have shown some leniency. But the ref decided to act differently and gave the card. He’s a player who was caught up in the heat of the moment, he’s hot-blooded, but in my view he could have avoided that card," Cuca argued.
