Carlos Vicente has reignited the Spanish v English football debate after leaving Deportivo Alavés for Birmingham City, arguing the Championship’s standard matches LaLiga.
“There is immediate urgency to win promotion,” he said, adding that Birmingham’s project was decisive for his switch, as told to Flashcore. He insisted the level in England’s second tier does not fall short of Spain’s top flight.
Vicente made an instant impact with an assist in a victory on debut. A swift integration in the dressing room has strengthened his belief that he chose well.
He outlined clear stylistic contrasts between LaLiga and the Championship. He described the latter as less tactical with fewer pauses in build-up, but faster in tempo and more physically demanding, with less time to think and more transitions. Even so, he dismissed any notion that the quality is lower.
Individually, he believes many Championship players could compete in elite Spanish teams. He also called this the biggest challenge of his professional career.
His aim is Premier League football, ideally by going up with Birmingham. He noted the appeal of a possible Aston Villa derby and said thriving in the English game could enhance his prospects of a Spain call-up. Enjoying one of the best spells of his career, he has already surpassed his previous season goal tallies within half a campaign.
