Porto's unbeaten 2025/26 Primeira Liga campaign came to an end at Estádio Municipal de Rio Maior where they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Casa Pia.

Francesco Farioli’s side had a strong start and should have taken an early lead. Alan Varela found Borja Sainz behind enemy lines, but the Spaniard slipped with Pablo Rosario wide open in front of goal.

Casa Pia hadn't threatened before opening the scoring in the 12th minute. Jeremy Livolant sent a dangerous cross to the back post where Gaizka Larrazabal got in front of Francisco Moura and found in the net.

Gabri Veiga went close before being denied by Patrick Sequeira, Varela then hitting a swerving shot that shaved the outside of the post.

The surprises kept coming on the stroke of half-time when Casa Pia doubled their advantage. Abdu Conte whipped a free kick into the danger area where Thiago Silva, under pressure from João Goulart, diverted the ball into his own net.

Alberto Costa replaced an injured Martim Fernandes at the break and was involved in a goal less than 60 seconds after the restart.

Casa Pia couldn't clear the ball, Costa heading it back into the box where Pablo Rosario fired into the bottom corner. Multiple protests from the hosts were denied, the Dragons back into the game.

Sequeira did well to deny Silva as the rain showed no signs of relenting in Rio Maior. Francesco Farioli brought on Victor Froholdt and William Gomes for Varela and Sainz.

Veiga fired too close to Sequeira before Farioli gambled in the 71st minute, Silva and Pepê replaced by Oskar Pietuszewski and Deniz Gül. Gül’s shot was saved by Sequeira before Casa Pia threatened at the other end, Alberto Costa doing well to head Livolant’s effort off the line.

Porto’s chances were dealt a big blow in the 79th minute when they were reduced to 10 men. Gomes kicked David Sousa in the head, immediately knew what was coming and accepted the punishment, referee Pedro Ramalho showing the substitute a straight red card.

Khaly threw Froholdt to the ground which resulted in Veiga firing a free kick into the wall.

Clau Mendes could have confirmed the victory but sent his shot straight at Diogo Costa. Casa Pia successfully navigated 11 minutes of added time for a famous victory, Porto finally beaten in the Primeira Liga.

Conditions level the playing field

Portugal has been battered by storms and rain which has wreaked havoc on large parts of the nation. The precipitation also caused damage to the Primeira Liga leaders.

Last night we witnessed Benfica being held to a 0-0 draw in Tondela, proving that playing on a cow paddock gives the minnows a fighting chance against the top teams in Portugal. The elite teams are unable play a passing game and the contest increasingly descends into a dogfight.

Pablo Rosario summed up the game after the final whistle, saying: “We created many chances, enough to score more, but sometimes the ball just doesn't go in. I repeat: this pitch is not suitable for the First Division. We will recover today and tomorrow and then prepare for the next game.”

Most of the narratives will surround Porto, but it's important to give Álvaro Pacheco and Casa Pia credit. It was Pacheco's third game in charge after replacing João Pereira, the three points lifting the Geese out of the relegation play-off position.

Pacheco reflected on the victory, saying: "This victory only gives us three more points in our journey. And it also makes us reflect on what made us achieve these three points. It was the work, it was the focus, it was clearly identifying with the Casa Pia identity that we are building here."

Get set for the Clássico

Sporting Clube de Portugal were close to joining the rest of the big three in surrendering points until Luis Suárez’s 95th minute winner secured a 2-1 victory against Nacional.

The results means we will witness the most important Primeira Liga match of the season at Estádio do Dragão on Monday. Porto host Sporting CP in the Clássico, the Dragons starting the game with a four point lead over the Lions.
