Manchester United are not expected to reverse their decision to allow veteran midfielder Casemiro (34) to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season, despite a resurgence in form that has prompted calls from supporters and team-mates for him to remain at Old Trafford, according to reports from BBC Sport.
The 34-year-old, who joined United from Real Madrid in 2022 after winning five UEFA Champions League titles, confirmed in January that he would depart when his £350,000-a-week deal runs out this summer. Club executives, led by co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, decided against triggering an extension as part of a wider effort to reduce costs and reshape the squad.
Casemiro’s performances since that announcement have nevertheless reignited debate over his future. The Brazilian scored his seventh goal of the campaign in Sunday’s victory over Aston Villa, celebrating in front of the Stretford End by repeatedly pointing to the United badge on his shirt as supporters responded with chants of “One more year, Casemiro”.
Captain Bruno Fernandes and defender Leny Yoro both expressed hope that the experienced midfielder might stay, but the club’s stance appears unchanged.
Interim head coach Michael Carrick acknowledged the player’s continued influence but indicated the decision had been made with long-term planning in mind.
“The impact he’s had has been terrific, through his influence within the team and with big moments and goals,” Carrick said. “When something is decided it makes it a little bit easier and everyone understands the situation.”
