Edinson Cavani and Carlos Palacios, left out of the trip to Brazil for the Copa Libertadores, are set to rejoin Boca Juniors after facing Cruzeiro. According to Sitiboca.com.ar, both forwards could make the postponed match with Central Córdoba, which will conclude this phase of the Apertura.
Before the third Group D fixture against Cruzeiro, the plan is for Cavani and Palacios to resume work with the squad on their return. In an optimistic scenario, they might be named in the squad for Central Córdoba.
Coach Claudio Úbeda has endured setbacks while trying to recover his options. Agustín Marchesín is out until the end of the year, Ánder Herrera has suffered another muscle tear, and Rodrigo Battaglia remains without a return date after Achilles tendon surgery.
Despite Boca’s strong run in the competition, the comebacks of Palacios and Cavani are viewed as vital for squad depth. Palacios has not featured this year due to knee synovitis and underwent surgery in February, with two months of rehabilitation.
Cavani’s initial return was limited, then he began treatment on a lumbar problem that has kept him out. If he links up with the group on Wednesday, he is expected to start formal training with a view to a possible return before the World Cup.
Their availability could be decisive in the closing stages of the Libertadores group phase and the Apertura play-offs.
