The Brazilian Football Confederation released the VAR audio from the penalty awarded to Santos, which secured a 2-2 draw at Mirassol in the fifth round of the Brasileirão at José Maria de Campos Maia.
The incident came with the hosts still 2-1 ahead. Santos pressed the hosts’ build-up, forced a turnover and worked the ball into the area, where Gabriel Barbosa was fouled, before scoring the resulting penalty.
VAR summoned referee Raphael Claus to the monitor at 39 minutes of the second half, and he upheld the decision to award a spot-kick. He opted for a penalty without a booking.
In the review, the VAR team examined multiple angles and judged there was contact from behind on Barbosa before the ball arrived, hindering his attempt to shoot. On that basis they recommended an on-field review, which led to the call.
The match was officiated by Raphael Claus, with Ilbert Estevam da Silva as VAR.
