Donald Trump celebrates with Chelsea Blues
No one could have expected anything less. Donald Trump once again stole the spotlight on Sunday night at the Club World Cup. Chelsea's Blues say they were left stunned.
Donald Trump's surprising behavior during the trophy presentation quickly became the talk of the football world after the Club World Cup final. The American president, who arrived by helicopter roughly 35 minutes before kickoff, enjoyed VIP treatment and watched the match alongside his wife Melania and FIFA president Gianni Infantino. While his presence was anticipated, it was Trump’s role during the trophy ceremony that truly caught everyone off guard.
As tradition dictates, after handing the trophy to the captain of the winning team, the head of state is expected to leave the stage to let the players celebrate. But Donald Trump remained at center stage, right in the thick of the celebration alongside the players. This unusual stance clearly unsettled the Blues.
Cole Palmer, the tournament’s best player, shared his surprise after the match: "I knew he would be there, but I didn’t know he would be on the podium when we lifted the trophy. I was a bit lost, yes."
Captain Reece James also gave his account: "To be honest, it was pretty loud. I couldn’t really hear much. He just congratulated me and the team for lifting the trophy and told us to enjoy the moment."
Those congratulations weren’t enough to dispel the awkwardness created by Trump’s prolonged presence on the podium. Gianni Infantino had to politely ask Donald Trump to leave the stage, but he chose to stay, even going so far as to raise his fist in celebration with the players, positioning himself at the center of the official team photo.
