Former Celtic midfielder Scott Brown has reportedly decided against a switch to St Johnstone. The Perth club were looking for a new manager after Craig Levein was sacked and Brown was heavily linked as a favourite. The 39-year-old has enjoyed an impressive start to life with Ayr United, which has caught the eye of the new Saints’ owner.

Adam Webb spoke with Brown but Mail Sport are reporting that Broony has decided to stay at Ayr United as he looks to bring the Honest Men back to the Premiership.

Brown, who left Celtic in 2021, had a successful first season in management with Fleetwood before being dismissed after a poor start to last season. The former Scotland International would have had good mitigation, given the club’s off field issues, which were further highlighted as neither Lee Johnson nor Charlie Adam could save them from the drop.

Levein was dismissed after a poor start to the season but his side still sat above both Kilmarnock and Hearts, who have failed to juggle European commitments and domestic duties in the early stages of the season.

Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic travel to Perth on Saturday for the 5:30pm kick-off. However, the Irishman will not cross swords with his former captain with Brown electing to continue with his project in Ayrshire rather than switching to Perth.
