Celtic FC have confirmed the sad passing of former player Mike Galloway at the age of 60, with tributes pouring in from across the Scottish football community.
Galloway joined Celtic in 1989 under Billy McNeill, arriving from Heart of Midlothian where he had made over 70 league appearances and established himself as one of the more versatile players in Scottish football – equally comfortable across defence and midfield. He went on to make around 50 competitive appearances for Celtic in all competitions, winning the Scottish Cup in 1989–90 and the Scottish League Cup in 1992–93, before later moving on to Leicester City with loan spells at Kilmarnock and Motherwell along the way.
His career brought him international recognition too – he earned a full Scotland cap in 1991, a testament to the quality he showed during a period when Celtic were navigating a difficult transitional phase. It is one of the sadder truths of his story that a near-fatal car accident in 1995 effectively ended his time at the top level, cutting short what had been a genuinely promising career at both club and international level.
After stepping away from senior football, Galloway remained part of the game he loved – coaching and playing at non-league level with clubs including Coldstream, Wooler, Berwick United and Eyemouth United, and by all accounts becoming a respected and well-liked figure in the Borders football community. Hearts were among the first to pay tribute, describing him as a popular and committed member of their late-1980s sides.
On Celtic fan forums and social media, supporters have been sharing memories of a player they describe as underrated and wholehearted – a proper Celt who gave everything during his time at the club. Further tributes are expected at upcoming fixtures, with both Celtic Park and Tynecastle likely to mark his passing in the coming days.
We send our deepest condolences to Mike Galloway’s family, friends, and all who knew him. He will not be forgotten. Rest in peace, Mike.
