Celtic got back to winning ways with a 3-0 victory against Hearts. The result takes them one step closer to the Premiership title. Daizen Maeda scored a brace, reaching 30 goals for the season. Jota also got himself on the scoresheet. And there was one other notable performance on the day, that could have long-term implications on the team.
Brendan Rodgers made an unexpected decision against Hearts by starting Maik Nawrocki. Auston Trusty, who has been the regular starter alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers this season, was left on the bench.
Nawrocki had done well after being brought in from the cold against the Rangers. He backed that up with another solid performance against Hearts.
One has to wonder if he has done enough to convince Rodgers about his place in the team. Celtic have had their issues at the back this season. Conceding nine goals in the previous three games against the Rangers is proof of that. Is Nawrocki part of the solution?
Nawrocki was signed by Celtic in the summer of 2023. But he never really got a lot of chances in his debut campaign with the club, as Rodgers appeared to prefer Liam Scales ahead of him.
This season had been a similar story until recently with Carter-Vickers and Trusty being the regular starting pair in the heart of the defence. But now, Nawrocki has gotten a chance out of almost where and grabbed it with both hands.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Nawrocki but his Celtic career has certainly been given a lifeline. Until recently, he was expected to leave in the summer on a permanent basis. But now, it looks like that situation might end up changing, depending on how things go between now and the end of the campaign.
