César Huerta, 25, is poised for a return to Mexican football after 18 months in Belgium, playing for Anderlecht.
Mexico’s winger is set to make his first-ever appearance at the World Cup this week having been selected by Javier Aguirre with Mexico opening the tournament against South Africa at the Estadio Banorte.
Not long ago, Huerta was a nailed-on choice, but through a mix of poor form and setback injuries, his inclusion was a surprise.
Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Huerta, also known as “Chino” in reference to his long curly hair, started in the Chivas academy before heading to Zacatepec, Monacras Morelia and Mazatlán on loan.
His loan spells across Mexico’s top divisions offered valuable experience but it was only when he sealed a permanent move to Pumas that he found his feet at the highest level.
20 goals in 80 matches made him an essential player in the capital, catching the eye of Europe’s elite with teams from Spain, England and Germany all interest in his signature.
Despite wide-spread interest, Huerta signed for Belgian-Pro side Anderlecht in January 2025, becoming the first Mexican to ever represent the Brussels-based side.
Shortly after joining, he scored on his debut during a 2-0 win against KV Kortrijk to win the fans over. By the end of the season, he would go on to score three goals and provide two assists, as many believed that the 2025/26 season would be his breakout.
Unfourtantely, his season was disrupted by long-time periods on the sidelines through injuries, meaning that he only featured six times for the Belgian giants, leading to widespread rumours linking with a return back to Mexican football.
Those rumors appear to have a grain of truth. Just days before the World Cup gets underway, César Huerta is reportedly heading closer to a return to Mexico with the recent Concacaf Champions Cup winners Toluca set for his signature.
Antonio Mohamed, Toluca manager, is keen to add depth to his side as Los Rojos Diablos look to add a third Liga MX title during his tenure and believe Huerta would be a perfect signing.
According to Fox Deportes, Huerta has reached an agreement to join the club with a fee yet to be set between the two clubs.
The move would mark an underwhelming and brief spell for the winger in Europe who will be hoping to get his career back on track after setting the league alight during his time with Los Universitarios.
