Cesar Peixoto is set to be unveiled as Wolves’ new head coach.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 46-year-old was at Compton yesterday to sign his deal with the Championship club. He will take over from Rob Edwards, who was sacked on Thursday morning.

Peixoto will leave Portuguese side Gil Vicente after 16 months, having led them to sixth in the top flight last season.

Social media leaks on Wednesday evening revealed a verbal agreement with Peixoto while Edwards remained in post. It is understood Edwards learned via family while abroad on holiday, as he worked on transfer plans.

A phone call on Thursday morning then informed Edwards he had been dismissed, and it is understood some senior staff were unaware of the planned change.

Fosun chairman and co-founder Guo Guangchang and Wolves chairman Nathan Shi worked with agent Jorge Mendes and Gestifute to secure the agreement. Benfica had also shown interest before appointing former Fulham boss Marco Silva.

Mendes presented Peixoto, a Gestifute client, to Wolves and a decision followed to dismiss Edwards. Peixoto is known for front-foot attacking football, believed to have appealed to the club. Shi hinted at a shift in style when announcing Edwards’ exit.
