The Valley, and the Sparrows Lane training ground, are both owned by controversial former owner Roland Duchatelet.

Charlton Athletic fans want the club to explore buying the stadium and training ground

When discussing the latest development, Chief Financial and Operations Officer Ed Warrick explained that this was a big moment for the club, as it ensures the club will continue to play at their historic stadium, with The Valley having been the Addicks’ home for over 100 years.

As well as that, Warrick explained that the agreement offers the ‘foundation for further development’, which is sure to please the supporters.

Yet, even though there are clear positives to this update, the main issue for supporters is that the club still doesn’t own their own training ground or stadium.

Therefore, many of the comments on social media in response to the update centered on whether the club are looking to purchase both sites from Duchatelet.

Meanwhile, one fan pointed out that failing to own the stadium or training ground will also put the long-term future of the club in doubt, as they could be left in a terrible position when the lease expires.

Another questioned whether this was a significant update considering Duchatelet remains the owner of the sites.

But, it wasn't all bad news, as one fan was pleased that the club have sorted the issue for the foreseeable future with the fresh agreement.

Another fan echoed that, as they explained that the focus should be on improving Nathan Jones' squad as the club try to establish themselves back in the second tier.

Charlton Athletic are making progress as a club

Of course, in an ideal world, Charlton would own the stadium and training ground, and there will always be some concern considering Duchatelet does. But, this agreement is a positive step in the sense that it secures their future until 2040.

Ultimately, though, the fans will trust the current regime, as they have got a lot right since they've come into the club, and we all know the issues that the Londoners had in the past.

The appointment of Jones was an inspired one, and he has brought success to the club on the pitch, with the owners backing him to deliver the project that they all wanted.

So, it seems apparent that the club are heading in the right direction, and, hopefully, one day in the future Charlton can reach an agreement to become outright owners of The Valley and the training ground.
