Charlton Athletic have been urged to avoid making a move to re-sign Hull City striker Mason Burstow this summer.

Charlton Athletic are gearing up for a second season back in the Championship, having eventually staved off relegation from the second-tier last season.

Under the management of Nathan Jones, The Addicks gained promotion from League One via the play-offs in the 2024/25 campaign, defeating Leyton Orient at Wembley Stadium.

After some investment in the squad last summer, which included the £5 million addition of Charlie Kelman from Queens Park Rangers, having been League One’s top scorer for Orient in the previous campaign, Jones was able to revamp his squad to competitive in the Championship.

A disappointing second-half to the campaign in which relegation again reared its head before the South Londoners steered clear, another proactive summer transfer window is expected at The Valley.

Despite that, and work that is likely to be needed on the squad so not to stand still and thus go backwards, Charlton have been urged to avoid making a move for Mason Burstow.

It has been reported that, following their promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs in May, Hull City will have to raise £6 million in sales very quickly to avoid a Profit and Sustainability punishment.

One man that may be at the forefront of their minds in terms of raising money for is former Chelsea striker Mason Burstow, who joined the club for a fee of £2 million in the summer of 2024 before spending last season out on loan at League One play-off winners Bolton Wanderers.

Burstow, who came through the academy at Charlton, may have his suitors in both the Championship and at the top end of League One but FLW’s Charlton Fan Pundit Chris Woodward believes that Athletic should avoid a move to re-sign Burstow this summer.

Chris says: “Personally I would be leaving Mason Burstow in the past.

“Charlton already have a plethora of younger and promising attacking forwards in (Micah) Mbick, (Miles) Leaburn, (Daniel) Kanu, (Charlie) Kelman and (Tyreece) Campbell.

“To add in another similar profile doesn’t seem like an appropriate strategy, especially considering how a lot of our players have struggled in the Championship, despite having good seasons in League One, with Burstow being no exception to that trend with difficult spells at both Sunderland and at Hull at Championship level.

“Then when you consider we are in contract negotiations with both (Matty) Godden and (Lyndon) Dykes, and still have (Tanto) Olaofe on the books, we don’t even have the space to bring in another forward to our squad.

“In today’s market, forwards especially in the EFL, as we learned last season, don’t come cheap and Charlton need to concentrate on fixing up other areas of the pitch, like the midfield first, which should take up a large proportion of the budget before we can even address bringing in a striker.

“Considering that Hull need to raise funds, they will likely squeeze every last cent they have out of Burstow.

“Personally, I don’t see any way Burstow would be a viable option for Charlton to look at this summer.”

Mason Burstow did an impressive job at Bolton

Having signed just a few days before the start of last season with The Trotters having no fit first-team centre-forward, Mason Burstow’s arrival at Bolton was met with scepticism from many supporters.

However, scoring seven goals in his first 12 appearances in the third-tier helped the former England youth international win over some of those doubters.

Burstow did then endure a difficult time of it for the bulk of the rest of the campaign, though, with Sam Dalby and Johnny Kenny eventually leapfrogging him in the pecking-order up-front.

With Kenny injured for the play-offs and Dalby fighting to get back to full fitness, Burstow did start both legs of their play-off semi-final defeat of Bradford City as well as the final against Stockport County, without scoring but playing well.

That tendency for Burstow to not be overly prolific but link up the play to a very decent standard did become a familiar and frustrating trait for many Bolton supporters, and so the sceptics do remain at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, too.

However, at the age of 22, Burstow comes off the back of a promotion-winning campaign in which he contributed 18 direct goal involvements and many believing there is a lot more for him to give and quite a high ceiling as he continues to develop, with clear signs as to why he was so highly-rated when Chelsea poached him from Charlton.

Understandably, doubts remain as to whether or not he would be able to score enough goals to be a worthwhile signing for a Championship club, though, and, with the abundance of options that Charlton
