A game of two halves in pulsating London derby
Chelsea fought back from two goals down to beat West Ham in a thrilling London derby on Saturday.
Liam Rosenior’s decision to make SEVEN changes to the Chelsea side that started the Champions League win over Napoli in midweek backfired in spectacular fashion, particularly in the first-half.
However, Rosenior was justified for ringing the changes at half-time as the Blues battled back to earn a win that moves them above Manchester United in the Premier League table.
As for the Hammers, their mini unbeaten run in the league comes to an end and they remain five points from safety.
Within seven minutes the Blues were trailing. Jarrod Bowen was afforded far too much space down the right and his left footed cross beat Robert Sanchez and snuck in at the far post.
The Hammers, in truth, were well worth their lead and it was no surprise they doubled it shortly before half-time thanks to a stunning finish by Crysencio Summerville.
That goal, the winger’s fourth in as many appearances, resulted in the Chelsea players being booed off at half-time, with supporters taking aim at a sloppy performance.
Rosenior responded with a triple change at the break. On came Joao Pedro, Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana, and all three had an impact in the second half.
Firstly, Joao Pedro headed home Fofana’s peach of a cross to halve the deficit just before the hour mark and then Cucurella completed the comeback by reacting quickest to the ball coming back off the crossbar.
Jean-Clair Todibo has a glorious chance to win it for the Hammers late on but clipped the outside of the post from close range, that miss was compounded by Enzo Fernandez’s winning goal in stoppage time while the Frenchman was then sent-off for violent conduct.
