Jose Mourinho was back at Stamford Bridge for a press conference last night, and boy was it a classic.
The former Blues boss played on the emotions of his adoring former fans, hoping to erase some of the hurt from his moves to Spurs and Manchester United after leaving us.
Jose Mourinho speaking at Stamford Bridge.
“I will always be a Blue,” said Mourinho when asked how he felt now about the club where he’s won 3 league titles.
“I am part of their history. They are part of my history. I helped them to become a bigger Chelsea, and they helped me to become a bigger Jose.
“It will be my Chelsea before the start of the game and after the game but during the game it’s my Benfica and that’s all that matters. When I say I am not a Blue, I am only speaking about the job I have to do tomorrow.”
Mourinho even found time to back the current BlueCo project, while admitting he had had his doubts at first:
“What happened in the last season got things back on track. The Conference League is easy for a big club to win… And then the Club World Cup, I always say the Champions League is much more important, but the [gold] badge means a lot. It’s the first time a club has won [the expanded] Club World Cup. Congratulations to them. I think that gives them a base of trust and a base of confidence. So Chelsea is back on track.
“The Champions League is much more difficult to win than the Club World Cup, of course it is. But Chelsea has the potential to do it, I don’t see any reason to say ‘no, Chelsea can’t do it’.”
We will see about that – right now qualifying from the league phase looks like enough of a challenge.
