Deal brings Blues skipper in line with his team-mates in club’s bonus-driven wage structure
Reece James has signed a new six-year contract at Chelsea in a major boost to the club.
Captain James’ previous deal ran until June 2028 but the Blues have now secured his future until the summer of 2032.
The right-back is an influential figure at Chelsea, where he has gone from academy graduate to becoming one of the club’s senior leaders in a young squad.
Chelsea’s salary structure under the current BlueCo ownership has become heavily bonus-driven, with relatively low basic wages.
James’ previous deal is understood to have been out of sync with his team-mate’s contracts in that regard. The new agreement brings his terms in line with Chelsea’s more recent strategy.
“I am over the moon to have extended my contract - Chelsea means so much to me,” James said.
“I have always said I want my peak years to be here, and I truly believe we have everything it takes to build on our previous successes.
“I’m excited for the future under this ownership, sporting directors, coach and all the staff, and hopefully we will lift many more trophies together over the coming years.”
James is enjoying an excellent season for Chelsea, during which he has so far steered clear of previously frustrating injury struggles to make 35 appearances across all competitions.
He is likely in line to be England’s starting right-back at this summer’s World Cup finals in Canada, Mexico and the United States, if he continues to stay fit and in form for Chelsea.
James has played 225 times in total for the Blues since making his senior debut in 2018, winning five trophies including the 2021 Champions League under now-England manager Thomas Tuchel.
Chelsea’s co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart said: “On behalf of ownership and everyone connected to Chelsea, it is a proud moment for all of us to have Reece extend his contract.
“He is the leader of this team, both on and off the pitch. Reece knows what it means to wear this badge and, having committed his long-term future to Chelsea, we’re looking forward to continuing the journey and working towards further success together.”
