Chelsea interim manager Calum McFarlane hailed Levi Colwill as a leader of the squad after helping the side earn a 1-1 draw at Liverpool on Saturday.
The centre-back made his first start of the season since recovering from a serious knee ligament he sustained in pre-season.
Colwill slotted into a back three central defensive partnership with Wesley Fofana and Jorrel Hato. After a strong start for Liverpool, the trio succeeded in limiting the host’s attacking opportunities to bounce back from Monday’s 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.
“Levi was the best player on the pitch,” McFarlane told BBC Match of the Day after the full-time whistle. “He was a leader. It was his first 90 minutes for a long time.”
Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring for Liverpool after just five minutes, but Enzo Fernandez levelled matters just before the break.
Both Curtis Jones and Cole Palmer had goals chalked off in the second half, but the result means that Chelsea finally ended a six-game losing streak in the Premier League.
“It’s a good point, a good performance in a game that could have gone either way,” McFarlane added. “It was disappointing to concede so early, and it’s something we’ll have a look at.
“But I was pleased with the response. I thought the reaction was brilliant and I knew it was something we could do.
“I thought we played some really nice stuff, we finished the half really well. As a whole the effort, commitment, work rate and desire was good.
“Last Monday was disappointing. We reviewed it and spoke about the reaction we wanted. I felt we got that and it’s something we can build on.”
