Chelsea are edging closer to finalising a deal that would see 19-year-old winger Tyrique George make a permanent move to Serie A side AS Roma.

According to Italian news outlet Gazzetta, talks between both clubs are progressing positively and are only ‘a step away’ from reaching an agreement.

The Chelsea academy graduate enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last term.

While he only featured in eight Premier League games, he scored a crucial goal against Fulham that turned the tide on Chelsea’s top-four qualification.

He ended the season with a goal and an assist in eight league games. He also featured 12 times in the Europa Conference League, returning a goal and two assists as the Blues went on to win the title.

Despite making 26 appearances across all competitions, his future at Stamford Bridge is far from certain.

A wave of new attacking signings has pushed him down the pecking order, leaving little prospect of regular playing time this season.

George is already behind Pedro Neto and Jamie Gittens. But with deals for Xavi Simons and Alejandro Garnacho in the works, George will be better off leaving Chelsea for a new adventure.

The teenager has already made it clear that he would be open to leaving his boyhood club in search of consistent first-team opportunities.

Chelsea initially wanted to send him out on a season-long loan, but Roma want to sign him on a permanent deal.

Both clubs are negotiating terms of a deal with a figure of around €22 million (£19m) being discussed, while Chelsea also want a heavy sell-on clause of around 30-40%.

George isn’t the only Chelsea player who could leave the club before next week’s deadline.

The Blues are also working on exit deals for a host of players, including Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku, who have both attracted interest from Bayern Munich.

At the moment, the Bundesliga champions are more interested in securing a deal for the Senegalese striker, while RB Leipzig are weighing up the prospect of reuniting with Nkunku at the Red Bull Arena.
