Chelsea are preparing to enter the January transfer market with a focus on strengthening their defensive options. As reported by The Express, manager Enzo Maresca is expected to push for a new central defender amid a string of fitness concerns across his back line.

Levi Colwill remains sidelined, while Wesley Fofana and Tosin Adarabioyo have both faced recurring injury issues. Trevoh Chalobah’s red card against Brighton, which brought a one-match suspension, has only highlighted the squad’s fragility in central defence.
Maresca had sought defensive reinforcements in the summer, with names such as Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo and Nottingham Forest’s Murillo linked, yet no deal materialised. Now, the need appears more pressing.

Despite persistent speculation, a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has been ruled out. The England international, whose contract runs until next summer, remains admired by Maresca but will not be making a Stamford Bridge return. Liverpool and several other European clubs are monitoring his situation, while Real Madrid are believed to be a potential long-term destination should they move for defensive cover.

Liverpool came close to signing Guehi during the summer before Crystal Palace withdrew from talks late in the window. Although Maresca’s admiration for the player is clear, Chelsea’s stance appears definitive for now.
Speaking last season, Maresca addressed speculation surrounding the Palace captain. He said: “The only thing I can say is Marc Guehi is a Palace player. I like Marc for sure, but he is not our player. I also like the centre-halves we have and I like different central defenders in Italy, Spain and France but that doesn’t mean we are going to buy the player.”

The Italian’s comments underline Chelsea’s intent to explore other markets and maintain a measured approach to recruitment, particularly given their record spending in recent seasons.
Chelsea’s January window could see a targeted move for a defender capable of providing stability alongside young talents like Benoît Badiashile and Colwill once fit. The club’s recruitment department remains in close dialogue with Maresca, with several continental names being assessed ahead of a busy winter period.
The decision to move away from a Guehi reunion will divide opinion. Many fans remember his composed displays from the academy system and feel his leadership would have added much-needed maturity to a young defensive group.
However, there is also understanding among supporters that the club must be strategic in its January dealings. Given the high investment made under the current ownership, fans want to see smarter spending and clear tactical fits rather than nostalgic signings. Guehi’s price tag and the interest from Real Madrid and Liverpool make such a deal complex.
Most Chelsea fans will back Maresca’s pragmatic stance. His faith in existing defenders, coupled with the likelihood of fresh scouting in Spain and Italy, suggests the club will look for a defender who can fit his possession-based system.
If the right player is found, particularly one with experience but room to grow, supporters will see this as a calculated step forward. Patience may be key, but after several chaotic windows, there is optimism that Chelsea’s recruitment is finally becoming more refined and sustainable under Maresca’s leadership.
