The Wednesday print edition of Sport Bild claims that Chelsea have informed Borussia Dortmund that Argentine defender Aarón Anselmino is not for sale. The 20-year-old has recently established himself in the German Bundesliga and BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl is on record stating that he wishes to purchase Anselmino permanently. Sport Bild nevertheless insists that Chelsea are not interested in negotiating at all.

After some bad injury luck early this season, Anselmino has cemented himself as a preferred starter in head coach Niko Kovac’s starting XI. Prior to some more bad recent injury luck, Anselmino had started in two consecutive league and two consecutive Champions League fixtures. Anselmino scored his first Bundesliga goal in a crucial matchday 12 win over top-four rivals Bayer Leverkusen.

Will Dortmund attempt to purchase Anselmino anyway?

One can definitely wager safe money on that. The BVB central defensive corps finds itself on the precipice of a total meltdown. Centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck recently called out his team colleagues for not delivering on the pitch. Schlotterbeck appears extremely discontented with the club and the latest on-pitch disappointments are certainly not helping Dortmund’s stalled attempts to get him to extend his contract.

With captain Emré Can and former German international Niklas Süle struggling with both injury and form, Schlotterbeck and Waldemar Anton are the only other reliable centre-backs Kovac can call upon presently. Ramy Bensebaini has been doing a decent job filling in out of position in Kovac’s back-three, but may into his own injury and form issues whilst on international duty for Algeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Simply stated, Dortmund need several “wins” in the coming January transfer window. Kehl has often delivered when it comes to restocking the personnel ranks midseason. The BVB personnel chief also successfully navigated his way through several Chelsea “hard nos” in the matter of Carney Chukwuemeka’s permanent purchase.  The final word on this player is far from being spoken.
