Enzo Maresca has been described as a “master of rotation” by a Stamford Bridge insider in a piece written by Kieran Gill for the Daily Mail today.

The piece was all about how hard it had been to predict the manager’s lineups last season, and how that was set to become even more difficult in the season to come with so many new options added to his squad.

Jorrel Hato is set to join as an option at left back, meaning Marc Cucurella is no longer one of the certainties you can rely on every week in the XI. As for the attacking line – there’s just no telling who is going to be in there.

Cole Palmer could be central or right. There are now 3 options up front. Pedro Neto looks likely to start the season as Maresca’s favourite wide man, but one of Jamie Gittens, Estevao Willian, Tyrique George or potentially Xavi Simons could be the incumbent come Christmas.

Manager’s favourites will stay his favourites – but with competition

As much as Maresca did like to rotate last season, it had become clear which players were his favourites. Some he was just using because he didn’t have a better option. Noni Madueke probably falls into that category – Maresca used him plenty, but didn’t hesitate to sanction his sale to Arsenal this summer.

Levi Colwill, Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez all feel like certainties to play every week when they’re fit. Robert Sanchez, as unpopular as he is with fans, also falls into that category.

The squad looks to have been upgraded in a major way this summer, but the flip side of that is that we are back to not knowing who is going to be in the team.
