Chelsea are pushing for Champions League qualification despite struggling for consistency this season.
Missed chances and a lack of goals have affected their results. Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu and Christopher Nkunku have combined for 12 league goals, nine of which have come from Jackson.
The Senegalese forward lacks the sharpness needed to lead the attack. Chelsea tried to sign Victor Osimhen in 2024, but disagreements over contract terms prevented a deal.
They are expected to sign a striker in the next transfer window. Several players, including Osimhen and Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap, have been linked with Chelsea,
According to the Telegraph’s Matt Law, the manager and club admire Delap, but Osimhen remains an option. He would be a better signing.
The Nigerian international has bagged 30 goals and five assists for Galatasaray this season. By contrast, Delap has tallied 11 goals and two assists in all competitions for Ipswich.
One of Chelsea’s most significant issues this season has been a lack of inexperience. The squad lacks players who have proven themselves at the highest level.
Osimhen has played in Serie A and the Champions League. Delap has spent most of his time in the Championship. He is promising, but not the finished article.
The Nigerian was a crucial player for Napoli in their 2022/23 Serie A-winning campaign – their first title in 33 years. His leadership and hunger for success would be invaluable for Chelsea.
Osimhen has a history of scoring crucial goals in high-pressure matches, demonstrating calmness and confidence under pressure.
He delivered key performances in league and European games for Napoli. Delap is talented, but he has not had many opportunities to prove himself in such high-pressure situations.
Osimhen uses his height and agility to great effect. He is strong in the air and can adapt to different attacking roles, making him a versatile option up front.
Delap is a traditional English number nine – powerful and physical – but he doesn’t offer the same level of flexibility. He also lacks experience against a wide range of defensive styles.
Chelsea have also been linked with Benjamin Sesko and Alexander Isak. Strengthening the attack is a priority for the club, and Osimhen is the best option available.
