Moises Caicedo picked up his third suspension of the season earlier this week, and he’ll now miss Chelsea’s match against Manchester City this weekend.

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo picked up his third suspension in the space of a month in midweek, all stemming from that red card he received against Arsenal on November 30th.

Caicedo served a three-game ban for that dismissal, before returning in a League Cup fixture against Cardiff and receiving a one-game ban for his second yellow card of the tournament. He’ll miss the semi-final first leg against Arsenal for that booking.

Caicedo was then booked against Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and Bournemouth in consecutive fixtures to hit the five-card mark and earn another suspension against Manchester City this weekend.

To earn three separate suspensions in the space of a month is certainly unusual. It will also be very frustrating to Chelsea fans, considering the repercussions of those bans.

Chelsea started well but could only draw at home to Arsenal down to 10 men. They then lost to Leeds United and drew with Bournemouth during Caicedo’s three-game ban.

The team will now have to face Manchester City in a key Premier League clash without Caicedo this weekend, before taking on Arsenal in the League Cup semi-final without the 24-year-old.

From an Arsenal point of view, the Premier League sending-off was obviously beneficial, and Caicedo’s absence for the League Cup semi-final is also a boost – even if only because it will help to protect Mikel Merino’s shins.

But the fact Chelsea are now set to face Arsenal’s title rivals Manchester City without Caicedo just days after parting ways with manager Enzo Maresca is less positive.
