Chelsea arrived at the London Stadium with questions to answer and left with emphatic ones. Despite losing Cole Palmer to injury in the warm-up and conceding early, they dismantled West Ham in a one-sided Premier League encounter that left the home fans seething.
Palmer’s absence might have rattled some teams, but Enzo Maresca handed teenager Estevao Willian a surprise start. It was far from a gentle introduction. Within six minutes, Estevao’s attempted backheel was cut out, Lucas Paquetá surged forward, and the Brazilian unleashed a stunning, swerving strike to give West Ham the lead.
If that had promised a contest, it proved little more than a flicker. Nine minutes later, Joao Pedro headed Chelsea level, easing any tension among the visitors. VAR soon intervened to chalk off Niclas Füllkrug’s finish for a marginal offside, and West Ham’s resistance all but evaporated.
Chelsea grew sharper and more ruthless. Pedro Neto’s crisp volley on 23 minutes tilted the balance, before Enzo Fernández tapped home from Estevao’s clever cross to give the visitors breathing space. The home crowd’s mood darkened, half-time boos drifting across the stadium.
After the interval, Chelsea’s dominance only deepened. Fernández should have scored again, but West Ham’s vulnerability at set pieces was exposed when Moisés Caicedo and Trevoh Chalobah struck from corners within four chaotic minutes.
For West Ham, this was not merely a defeat but a public unraveling. Goalkeeper Mads Hermansen endured a torrid home debut, misjudging both deliveries that led to Chelsea’s fourth and fifth. As the goals flew in, the stands thinned, frustration turning to fury.
Graham Potter, facing his old side, was left with the boos ringing in his ears. West Ham have now gone six home games without a win, conceding eight goals across their opening two Premier League fixtures – a grim statistic that speaks to a deeper malaise.
Chelsea, meanwhile, looked revitalised. This was more than just a first win of the season; it was a statement of intent, built not on individuals but on collective force.
