Eric Garcia has become a key player for Hansi Flick at FC Barcelona. After a difficult start last season following his loan spell at Girona, the defender has earned his place in the starting eleven, with his versatility highly valued by the German coach.

Garcia’s contract expires next year, and Barcelona are currently negotiating a renewal for the player, with an agreement until 2030, expected to be finalised soon.

Chelsea, Tottenham wanted Eric

According to reports in England, as relayed by SPORT, several clubs showed interest in Garcia over the summer – notably Chelsea and Tottenham, who explored his signing but ultimately gave up after learning of his desire to continue at Barça.

Garcia’s contract situation, coupled with his versatility and experience in the Premier League, made him an attractive target for the two London clubs.

However, despite them testing the waters, it soon became clear that Garcia only wanted to continue at Barcelona, leading to both Chelsea and Spurs ending their pursuit of the Spanish international.

Renewal talks progressing

Although the renewal is not yet finalised, negotiations are progressing well, and as Garcia explained in a recent interview, his only wish is to remain at Barcelona.

“There are talks going on, and hopefully they will come to fruition as soon as possible,” stated the versatile defender.

The confidence shown in him by Flick was decisive, especially when Girona once again tried to bring him back in January earlier this year.

Garcia has been one of the Catalans’ most consistent players this term, be it as a centre-back or on the right side of the defence.

The La Masia trainee has featured in all 13 official matches for Barça this season, starting in 10 of them – clear evidence that he has become one of Flick’s key players. And, soon, a renewal agreement is likely to be reached.
