All eyes will be on the dugout at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday as José Mourinho makes his first return to Chelsea as an opposing manager, bringing his Benfica side for a crucial Champions League clash.
The hosts are in the midst of a crisis under Enzo Maresca and are desperate for a result after a poor run of form. Mourinho, conversely, will be relishing the chance to pile more misery on his former club.
Enzo Maresca is dealing with a severe injury crisis. Cole Palmer, Levi Colwill, and Wesley Fofana are among a host of key players ruled out. In addition, João Pedro and Moisés Caicedo face late fitness tests. Trevoh Chalobah is available, however, as his domestic suspension does not apply in Europe.
José Mourinho has a relatively settled squad to choose from for his return to London. Long-term absentees Bruma and Alexander Bah are unavailable. Star striker Vangelis Pavlidis, who has already scored seven goals this season, will lead the attack for the Portuguese side.
The Blues are on their worst run of the season, with just one win in their last five matches. Consecutive defeats to Bayern Munich and Brighton have highlighted their defensive frailties. Currently on a three-game losing streak in the Champions League, they will lean on their strong home record in the group stage, where they are unbeaten in 11 games.
Benfica have steadied the ship under Mourinho, and are unbeaten in his three league games. Their European campaign started with a shock 3-2 home defeat to Qarabag, however, raising questions about their continental credentials. Furthermore, they have a dreadful record against English teams, having not won in their last eight attempts.
Chelsea predicted XI: Sanchez; Gusto, Chalobah, Badiashile, Cucurella; Fernandez, Lavia; Estevao, Buonanotte, Garnacho; George
Benfica predicted XI: Trubin; Dedic, Otamendi, A. Silva, Dahl; Barrenechea, Rios; Lukebakio, Sudakov, Schjelderup; Pavlidis
The match will be broadcast live on TNT Sports 1 in the UK. Coverage begins at 7:30 pm BST.
