Xabi Alonso took charge of Blues officially for first time in pre-season tour opener

Chelsea began the Xabi Alonso era on Tuesday morning with an entertaining 6-4 friendly defeat of Western Sydney Wanderers at Accor Stadium. This was the Spaniard’s first match at the helm and there was plenty for him to analyse as ten goals flew in and Joao Pedro’s late hat-trick sealed the proverbial three points for the travelling Londoners. Joining him on the scoresheet was Jamie Gittens, Dario Essugo and the young debutant Dastan Satpayev.

Chelsea were without a number of key stars who remain on holiday following the World Cup, a group that includes new club-record £117million signing Morgan Rogers, while other new arrivals such as Emmanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda miss out through injury. Alonso revealed post-match that Romeo Lavia was ruled out of the match with a hamstring injury.

Several highly-rated youngsters also got their chance to impress and will do so again in future with Chelsea also scheduled to play Juventus, AC Milan, Johor Darul Ta'zim and Real Sociedad before returning to Premier League action against rivals Fulham on August 24.
