Lian Rosenior has some big selections to make for Champions League clash
Chelsea are likely to have three players returning from illness or injury for Wednesday’s Champions League tie against Pafos but will be without Tosin Adarabioyo.
Malo Gusto sat out of Saturday’s win over Brentford with a minor injury, while Jamie Gittens and Estevao were both unavailable due to a bout of illness which had spread through the Chelsea camp.
But all three players were part of the Blues’ training session at Cobham on Tuesday morning and are expected to be back available to feature against Pafos at Stamford Bridge.
However, Tosin Adarabioyo was not part of the training session, having been taken off with a hamstring injury against Brentford. He is now expected to be sidelined for a number of weeks, after head coach Liam Rosenior issued an update at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
“Unfortunately for Tosin, there's something in his hamstring which is going to rule him out for the next few weeks,” Rosenior said.
Rosenior also explained that Enzo Fernandez had played through illness against Brentford and missed training on Monday. He did train Tuesday but a decision on his availability against Pafos will be made on the day of the game with Rosenior implying he may be unlikely to start.
Axel Disasi did train on Tuesday but has been frozen out of the first-team picture in terms of game time and is not in the picture to play, in large part because of a lack of match fitness.
Rosenior may decide to rest some of key players against Pafos, with a trip to Crystal Palace in the Premier League to come on Sunday.
Cole Palmer completed just his third full 90 minutes in the league this season against Brentford and is unlikely to be used for the full game again.
Striker Liam Delap came off the bench on Saturday but was put up to speak in Chelsea’s press conference ahead of the Pafos game, which indicates he is likely to start the match.
Rosenior may hand Filip Jorgensen a rare game in goal instead of first-choice goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, and there could also be a start for the returning Gittens.
Chelsea predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Jorgensen; Gusto, Acheampong, Badiashile, Hato; Caicedo, Santos; Neto, Estevao, Gittens; Delap
