Ruben Amorim was bitterly disappointed with Manchester United’s defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday and rightly so considering the chances created by the team.
But the head coach was impressed with his academy stars, who did not let him down. Harry Amass was impressive on the left while Tyler Fredricson was superb on his debut.
Senior stars like Rasmus Hojlund were dismal once again which is why Amorim opted to bring on Chido Obi in the second half with the 17-year-old an instant improvement.
He had not made a senior appearance since the international break with the ex-Arsenal starlet busy with U18 and reserve commitments.
But with United to focus on the Europa League in the weeks to come, more opportunities for Academy wonderkids is in store and the Denmark U21 international is expected to benefit.
In a recent interview with club media, Chido Obi revealed what advice the head coach has given him to succeed at the club while also spilling the beans on how training with the first team has helped him up his game.
“He’s just told me to be humble and keep working hard every day,” Chido said. “And hopefully I get more opportunities soon.
“My Dad and my Mum always told me to be a good person and listen to my coaches because they want me to get better, so it’s good.
“I’ve learnt to be smart and to think quicker by training with the first team because the game is quicker compared to Academy football. It helps me a lot, training with them every day.”
The Danish starlet has made five appearances for the senior team and even if his first senior goal has eluded him so far, his displays have earned him praise from Amorim as well as club legends.
The ex-Arsenal starlet has been on fire for the Academy, scoring 12 goals in 10 U18 games while also netting twice for the reserves.
United’s next Premier League game is against Bournemouth next weekend before focus will shift to the the crucial Europa League semi-final against Athletic Bilbao.
With Chido ineligible for the Europa League, he can expect his first start come Sunday.
