Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association, said he wants the Finalissima against Spain to be played at the Monumental on 27 March. He added they would now work on the venue issue.
The AFA said on X that Tapia will meet Conmebol president Alejandro Domínguez tonight to discuss planning for the match.
Tapia spoke after giving evidence at Comodoro Py in a case over alleged tax and social security withholding of 19,300 million pesos, stressing that they complied with the court’s requirements.
Spain’s federation has proposed the Santiago Bernabéu as host, amid uncertainty over playing at Lusail Stadium in Qatar because of the war in the Middle East.
The fixture brings together the champions of South America and Europe, with both sides seen as major contenders for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
His statement was taken by judge Diego Amarante, a day after AFA treasurer Pablo Toviggino submitted a written response in the same investigation.
The probe is examining possible irregularities in the retention and payment of football-related taxes, extends to other AFA officials, and has stirred political and sporting debate.
Tapia’s defence failed to have his summons annulled. The judge initially barred both men from leaving the country, later granting Tapia travel permission with four months to the World Cup in the United States.
