LOS ANGELES - The start of the FIFA Club World Cup - the brand-new global competition that will see Inter among the participating clubs - is drawing nearer. The Nerazzurri will play their opener against Monterrey at 18:00 local time on Tuesday 18 June (03:00 CEST on Wednesday 18 June) at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

The upcoming clash against the Mexican outfit will be Cristian Chivu's first game in charge of the Nerazzurri. Hear from the new Inter head coach as he speaks during his presentation press conference live from the team's training camp in Los Angeles.

Have you now realised your the coach for the Inter first team? "I was already the coach of a team in the Youth Sector. This club gives you the push to do something special, including in the Youth Sector. The sense of responsibility is great, the same as when I came here as a player. I've been here 13 years, with a little pause in between, but I've always been here". Maicon visited you during the session, have your other teammates from the treble got in touch? "We spoke about the past, we're a good group. I enjoyed seeing Maicon today, just like I liked seeing the messages from everyone. Having their support and trust makes me happy to be here". What courage did Inter show in choosing you? "We've gone back to our roots, Interismo. President Marotta has been here for a while, he knows what it takes. I've always had this word in mind: it means pride and loyalty. We're one of the best teams in Europe, we need to show it on the field. You can win and lose in football, but when things are going well, the club finds it more straightforward". How important will it be to start well, quickly? "The project is both new and familiar. We need to carry on what’s been done—Inter requires this kind of mindset. The bar has been raised in recent years, and we have to keep it there. It’s about having self-belief and confidence, and working well with both the club and the team.” How are you preparing for this competition? "We must honour this competition—there are 32 teams from all over the world, and it’s a unique moment for global football. Every team here will want to give their all. We’re at the tail end of the season, but we’re here to do our very best." Quanto la aiuta essere dentro l'Inter da tanto tempo? "Conosco tutto dell'Inter, ho anche molto tempo con Inzaghi quando allenavo l'Under 19. Conosco molti ragazzi. Per me non è un problema se mi chiamano Cristian o Mister". Qual è il futuro di Mkhitaryan, anche alla luce dell'arrivo di Sucic? "L'età non conta, contano le qualità, umana e tecnica. La carta d'identità non conta nel calcio. Contano le motivazioni, l'età è solo un numero. Henrikh ha sempre dimostrato tutto: il modo in cui gioca, la professionalità che dimostra. Ha sempre energie e motivazioni, quindi non è un problema. Bisogna sempre lavorare duramente e provare a essere la miglior versione di noi stessi". La prima partita sarà contro il Monterrey, come vi preparate? "Abbiamo studiato al video, sappiamo che hanno cambiato allenatore, probabilmente avranno fatto dei cambiamenti. Giocano in maniera propositiva, in verticale, hanno anche delle buone individualità". Ci racconta i giorni che l'hanno portato all'Inter? Si è sentito con Inzaghi? "È stata una sorpresa: nel mio progetto c'era quello di restare a Parma. Poi è arrivata la chiamata dell'Inter per avere un incontro. Ho chiesto il permesso a Federico Cherubini, come gesto di ringraziamento alla società gialloblù. L'Inter sapete cosa rappresenta per me, è un motivo di orgoglio e di onore. Io ho un ottimo rapporto con Simone Inzaghi e lo abbiamo mantenuto. L'avevo chiamato prima della chiamata per l'Inter, per fargli l'in bocca al lupo per la sua nuova avventura in Arabia". Come sta la squadra? "Questa competizione è anomala, ma bella. Non dimentichiamo il percorso della squadra: il valore della squadra non può essere giudicata dal fatto che non ha alzato trofei. Ha fatto un percorso straordinario. Il dovere di una squadra e dell'allenatore è dare sempre il massimo, per me non è una stagione fallimentare. L'Inter ha eliminato Bayern e Barcellona, era considerata una delle squadre più brave d'Europa poche settimane fa. Il fallimento non esiste: bisogna sempre provarci fino in fondo, il fallimento è quando accampi scuse o cerchi alibi. Stando coi giocatori non ho visto gente che punta il dito e cerca colpevoli". Avete già parlato di obiettivi? "Stiamo giocando ancora una competizione, la stagione non è finita. Dobbiamo portare in alto il nome dell'Inter in giro per il mondo. Siamo qui per raggiungere qualcosa di importante" In Serie A sfiderà colleghi con grande esperienza: è uno stimolo per lei? "Il mio pensiero è quello di far tornare fiducia e autostima in questi ragazzi meravigliosi: bisogna trovare energie in fretta per questa competizione, poi penseremo alla prossima stagione". Cosa si porta dentro dell'Inter? "Tutti questi anni in questa società: ho imparato rispetto, conoscenza, carattere, interismo. Questa maglia, questa squadra, mi hanno fatto innamorare, ho l'Inter nel cuore. Poi voi direte se sono bravo o meno, ma darò tutto quello che ho". Come si riparte dopo Monaco? "Perdere una finale di Champions fa male. L'unico pensiero che ho avuto prima della finale del 2010 era: "E se la perdo?". Ma ho detto ai ragazzi che il percorso che hanno fatto è importante. Troveremo le energie e le motivazioni per riprovarci. Abbiamo l'obbligo e il dovere di ambire a cose importanti. La storia dice questo. Bisogna avere rispetto per il nostro stemma e per la competizione che stiamo giocando e per tutti quelli che hanno alzato l'asticella in questi anni". Did you speak to Mourinho? "We spoke on the phone". What do you think about Monterrey? "I have respect for Mexican football. I know how investe they are in football. They always bring a great crowd of fans to raise the tempo" What do you expect from the FIFA Club World Cup? "International competitions are unpredictable, the have their own way: there's some experienced teams who aren't scared to play us". Parma proved to be your first impact in Serie A... "I tried to give my all to achieve a target. It was great, when you reach a target, everything changes".
