Lionesses forward Chloe Kelly has shed light on England’s ‘click’ celebration after her side booked their spot in the Euro 2025 knockout stages.

The Lionesses were in high spirits last Sunday after cruising past Wales 6-1 to secure their spot in the Euro 2025 quarter-final.

Substitutes Beth Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones were on the scoresheet, running to the bench, clicking their fingers to celebrate with the rest of the England squad.

Kelly, who joined Mead for the celebrations, explained the meaning behind the gesture.

“We have a little group of us that we have a group chat,” Kelly said. “The positive clicks is what we called it on the bench before the game.

“People saw us click, and everyone was like, what are they doing? But we are a positive clique and we said, if one of us comes on and scores, let’s do that as our celebration. It was one that we came up with on the bench.

“We work really hard on the training pitch in the gym, and it probably sometimes goes unnoticed. But it’s about sticking together, being at our best for when called upon, and training hard to get the best out of each other.

“The girls that are starting the game, we are making sure that they’re fully prepared, but also making sure that we’re prepared to come on the pitch and do a great job. We’ve got a great group of girls, so it’s about enjoying the whole experience as a group.

“Usually, cliques are negative, but it’s definitely not [a negative] one. We support each other as a 23, but also it’s about what it takes to win a tournament, and that’s what we’re trying to do.”

And Kelly says she is using the success of Euro 2022 to motivate her ahead of the big game. The forward stole the spotlight at Wembley Stadium, poking home the winner in the final.

“It’s just such a special memory for me,” Kelly said. “It’s one that I watch quite often if I ever need a little smile.

“It’s an incredible memory for me and my family. I’m sure my mum sends it to me quite often as well. It’s nice to have such a special memory at an incredible stadium like Wembley.

“I’ve had some highs, some lows, some in-betweens. I’m just me, a girl from west London enjoying football, and that’s what I’ll continue to be throughout my career.”
