Chris Rigg says he is ready to drive standards as Sunderland enter the Premier League and Europa League, and he believes his link with Enzo Le Fee can develop this season.

Rigg debuted aged 15 years and 203 days in an FA Cup win at Shrewsbury in January 2023, then scored his first senior goal against Crewe Alexandra in the Carabao Cup. He later struck in a 5-0 win over Southampton on his Championship debut to become the club’s youngest league goalscorer.

“I think I feel more together with the group. I feel we set high standards every day, which is not new to me because it’s what I want but it’s really high now because we have Europa League and the Premier League coming up. The standards are really high every day and I am loving it.” He told the club website.

Le Fee’s loan from Roma became permanent after the play-off final win over Sheffield United, and he delivered five goals and six assists in 36 Premier League appearances last season. “Enzo is unbelievable and it’s a privilege to play anywhere near him on the pitch. I think we have a good connection, I think it’s getting better and hopefully it can get better during the season.”

Sunderland faced Liverpool, Leeds United and Wrexham on a United States tour and visit Lens next, before hosting Rennes. Their campaign begins with a trip to Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town in three weeks.
