Christensen, Torrents react after CD Guadalajara 0-2 Barcelona – ‘The key was…’ | OneFootball

Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen emerged as a decisive figure in the Copa del Rey round of 32 as the Blaugrana secured a hard-earned 2-0 victory over CD Guadalajara. 

While the final score suggests control, the reality was far more demanding. 

Facing a highly motivated side on a difficult pitch and in cold conditions, Barcelona were forced to dig deep before finally breaking the deadlock in the 76th minute.

Christensen’s contribution went beyond just defensive solidity. The Danish centre-back rose highest to power home the opening goal. 

After the match, speaking to the club’s media team (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Christensen reflected on the mental challenge posed by the contest and the importance of staying focused throughout. 

“The key was to stay patient. Sometimes it’s difficult to maintain quality and we had to be patient and stay motivated. 

“We had to take every situation seriously. That was the most important thing for us, and I’m happy it ended well. 

“We tried to control the game, but sometimes it’s very difficult. A cold night, the pitch… I’m happy with the win and the mentality today.”

About the goal

When asked specifically about his decisive goal, Christensen played down individual praise and instead focused on its timing and significance for the team. 

Acknowledging a touch of fortune while underlining its value, the Dane admitted, 

“I was a bit lucky when it went in, but it was an important moment”, and went on to stress that for him it was “nice to have another game and for me to be able to play and perform well with the team is good.”

Alongside Christensen, one of the night’s most encouraging stories for Barcelona was the performance of young left-back Jofre Torrents. 

Handed a rare start by Hansi Flick, the youngster showed composure beyond his years and held his own against an energetic Guadalajara side.

After the final whistle, Torrents expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and spoke honestly about the challenge of the occasion. 

“I tried to go out there and do what I know how to do. I’m very happy. 

“We know that these games are tough, that these teams come out with everything they’ve got. We kept working until the end, and we got the win.”

The emotional weight of wearing the Barcelona shirt was also evident in his words, as he concluded, “Playing for Barça is a dream, and I was a little nervous, but I was fine with the help of my teammates and the coach.”
