Toni Duggan believes that the Manchester City players are pushing each other to get better and that everyone will need to be at their best if we are to challenge for the Women’s Super League title.
City extended our winning streak to eight games with a fabulous 3-0 victory over Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium to remain top of the WSL.
Rebecca Knaak headed us in front and Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw scored a second before Lauren Hemp marked her first start since September with a stunning effort.
Former City striker Duggan knows how difficult it is to win the WSL having been a major part of our 2016 title-winning success.
Speaking as a guest on Matchday Live, she was thrilled by the derby victory and is encouraged by the depth and quality in Andrée Jeglertz’s squad.

“It’s going to take everyone if they want to win this league and at this minute, everyone is performing,” she said following our Matchday Live coverage.
“If they could be top at Christmas that will be important for the players and then I’m looking at Chelsea and Arsenal who have got Champions League football in the mix.
“Everything’s going City’s way at the moment but we know how quickly things in football can change.
“But we’ve got players coming back at the right time, we’ve also got Mary Fowler and Kerolin to come back in and Alex Greenwood as well.
“So when I’m adding these things into the mix, I think people’s heads will start turning towards Manchester City and they’ll think they are definitely frontrunners for the title.
“We’ve these players coming back, it adds to the competition for places and that just brings out better performances and individuals.
“You know these players are coming back in and I’ve got to up my level even more.
“If Monday to Friday on the training pitch, the competition’s high, then the weekend becomes a bit easier because you’re playing with talented players all week and you want to keep your position in the starting line-up.”
Vivienne Miedema was named player of the match but it was a difficult choice with so many impressive performances.
The back-four and goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita maintained a clean sheet, the midfield gave City plenty of control and the attacking trio were a constant threat.
“Every single one of the players put in a shift and a great performance and they thoroughly deserved the three points,” Duggan said.
“It was the work rate of the team, even off the ball. People were putting in tough challenges, tracking back and doing ugly bits well.
“Manchester United couldn’t get into their rhythm and City stifled them. It’s a massive three points.”
