Bayern boss Jan-Christian Dreesen explains in the OMR podcast why he would prefer FCB to win the Champions League rather than the World Cup
The question in the OMR podcast made Dreesen smile briefly – and at the same time give a remarkably honest answer. The FC Bayern CEO had to decide: Would he rather see Germany win the World Cup or FC Bayern win the Champions League?
The answer was clear – even if Dreesen himself knew that not everyone would like it. „If I had to choose, I would like Bayern to win the Champions League,“ the Bayern boss explained openly
Moderator Philipp Westermeyer deliberately posed the question in a pointed way, as it could be argued that a World Cup title for the German national team would also have an indirect positive impact on FC Bayern – for example by increasing the attention for German soccer
But for Dreesen, the success of his own club is what counts most in the end. The 58-year-old himself admitted that his answer would probably not be met with universal approval. „That’s a mean question,“ he said with a laugh before explaining his decision
„Even if 70 million Germans are probably cursing me right now.“ Nevertheless, he stuck to his stance. As the CEO of a club that regularly competes for the most important title in European club soccer, this priority is only logical
The statement shows how strongly Dreesen’s perspective is now shaped by the club. He has been part of FC Bayern’s management team for over a decade and was initially responsible for the record champions‘ financial fortunes as CFO. He has been at the helm of the Munich club as CEO since 2023
In this role, the main focus is on securing the club’s sporting and financial success in the long term, with the Champions League naturally playing a central role
The competition is not only the most prestigious title in European club soccer in sporting terms, but is also hugely important economically. Deep Champions League runs mean additional income from TV money, sponsorship and marketing
The fact that winning the Champions League is Dreesen’s top priority is therefore also in line with the club’s strategic direction. FC Bayern wants to be one of the absolute top clubs in Europe in the long term – both in sporting and economic terms
A Champions League triumph would be the clearest proof of this
And even if many German soccer fans would probably prefer a World Cup title, Dreesen’s answer is ultimately only logical: anyone at the helm of FC Bayern thinks first and foremost about the success of their own club.
