Charlton Athletic have made a positive start to life back in the Championship after winning promotion from League One via the play-offs last season.

The Addicks currently find themselves ninth in the second tier during the November international break, which is on par with their highest league finish since being relegated from the Premier League in 2007, so it would be fair to say that things are going well in SE7 at present.

Nathan Jones' side have produced a few highly impressive performances during the early months of the 2025/26 campaign, with victories away against Sheffield United and Ipswich Town, as well as home wins over the likes of Blackburn Rovers and West Bromwich Albion, showing that they are more than capable of holding their own at this level.

While Charlton are seemingly on the up, there is always room for improvement, and Football League World's Addicks fan pundit believes there is one player who should be doing more than he has done so far this term.

Doubt cast over Tyreece Campbell's output for Charlton Athletic

We asked our Charlton fan pundit, Alfie, which one player divides opinion the most, and he picked out forward Tyreece Campbell.

"There are a couple of players that Charlton have who divide opinion," Alfie said.

"Charlie Kelman springs to mind, the new signing of the summer. Kaminski in goal sometimes divides opinion. Greg Docherty, our captain, divides opinion a bit.

"I think the biggest player that divides opinion would be Tyreece Campbell, who typically plays on the left wing for us but has played as a striker in a front two with Kelman for significant chunks of this season.

"The thing that makes him divide opinion is that he isn't a very high output player. He is from our academy, so that obviously means he gets a lot more patience from a lot of fans in a way that a new signing that had come externally wouldn't get.

"Obviously, Charlton take a lot of pride in our academy, so we always like to see an academy prospect coming through and doing well.

"He is an academy prospect. He has been given the number seven shirt. We rate him really highly, but I think the person who rates him higher than anyone else is Nathan Jones, the manager, who simply will not drop him at all for any reason, regardless of anything.

"The reason that some people dislike him is because, again, he is such a low output attacker. He doesn't score many goals — he is yet to score this season. He doesn't get many assists.

"What he does do, and this is what people that like him will say, is he is a chaos maker. There are stats going around about his shot-creating actions, which are very high.

"However, it depends on what you prioritise in an attacker. I personally think it is true that he creates a lot of shot-creating actions, it is true that he is a chaos maker, he does add pace to us, he does help us counter-attack, all of these things are true.

"However, as he gets older, I do think he needs to start providing more output for us, because you can't have your left-winger scoring less than five goals a season if you want to progress, I am afraid.

"He needs to stop going through these significant goal droughts.

"I think he is good enough at this level. However, I think if his output doesn't pick up in the next few years, we should look to improve on him.

"I have got every faith that his output will improve because if there is one thing Nathan Jones can do, it is develop a footballer.

"One more aspect that I think is relevant if you're talking about Tyreece Campbell, is that every side Charlton face this season, pretty much, their fans will say 'Charlton were slightly better than we expected and that number seven they had was really good, or really difficult to handle'.

"It is a weird phenomenon, because opposition fans will see him as the danger man, but we'll come out thinking 'Campbell wasn't great, he is missing chances again'.

"I think that speaks to the amount of danger he does show in a football match without necessarily being the man to score the goals or provide the assists."

First Championship goal could be key for Campbell

There is no doubt that Campbell brings a lot to Charlton despite his lack of goals, with his lightning pace and ability to run with the ball providing the team with a real outlet and attacking threat, while his relentless work out of possession perhaps goes under the radar but is vital to the way Nathan Jones sets his team up.

The 22-year-old had a couple of chances early on during the Addicks' 1-1 draw away at Hull City last month that he may well have taken if he was in form in front of goal. Last season, it took him until his 20th League One appearance of the campaign to get off the mark, but he then scored again in the very next game.

Later in the season, he put another run of goalscoring form together, with four goals in three appearances during March and April. It seems as though Campbell could well be a player who thrives on confidence when it comes to finishing chances, so he will hope his first Championship goal arrives soon and that it can be a catalyst for him to put together a scoring run.

Campbell enjoyed a good relationship up front with Matty Godden in League One last season, and with the experienced forward closing in on a return to action after injury, that could also help the Jamaican forward get back on the scoresheet.
