The signing of Santiago Gimenez has generated a lot of excitement among AC Milan fans, and some staggering numbers have emerged which help quantify it.
Gimenez became Milan’s second signing of the winter transfer window, joining from Feyenoord in a deal widely reported to be worth around €35m, with Alvaro Morata leaving for Galatasaray to free the spot.
Having been linked since the summer transfer window, ‘El Bebote’ arrives after two and a half years at Feyenoord, with whom he scored 65 goals in all competitions. It is likely that he will make his debut tonight against Roma in the Coppa Italia.
According to data from ClaroSports, Gimenez fever seems to have gripped everyone, even beyond Italy. There was a 388% increase in online sales and a 543% rise in personalised shirt sales in the 24 hours after Gimenez signed for Milan.
The USA represented 42% of sales and Mexico 18%, with Italy also having 18% and the Netherlands – where the forward arrived from – having 9%. In addition to that, 92% of printed shirts in that period had Gimenez’s name on.
In the United States more specifically, 33% of the orders were from California and 23% from Texas, two states where there is a sizeable Mexican population. Illinois is third with 7% of the orders.
