With less than three months until the World Cup begins, AFA president Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia and treasurer Pablo Toviggino have been placed under indictment for the alleged improper withholding of social security contributions. The decision was issued by federal economic criminal judge Diego Amarante, who also imposed 250,000 dollars in embargoes on the pair.

According to La Política Online, both men also face broader corruption allegations, including shell companies and money laundering. The report added that the Javier Milei government had considered moving against Tapia before the tournament, but the push now appears likely to wait until later in the year.

The offences cited do not currently involve pre-trial detention.

Tapia consolidated his power after Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph and holds significant influence within FIFA. One of his key allies has been Leo Messi, who has remained silent since the judicial investigations began.

When the case opened, clubs affiliated to the AFA backed Tapia by suspending a league round.

The indictment and embargo also cover AFA general secretary and Argentinos Juniors president Cristian Malaspina, along with other officials.
