On Tuesday, Benfica confirmed the signing of Clément Lenglet from Atlético Madrid to bolster Marco Silva’s defence. The 31-year-old centre-back arrives to fill the vacancy left by Nicolás Otamendi.
The France international has signed for one season, with a clause obliging Benfica to extend the deal by a further two years, taking it to June 2029. No fee is due to Atlético at this stage, and Benfica are committed to acquiring him outright, while the Spanish club retain a percentage of any future sale.
Lenglet landed in Lisbon on Monday, completed medical and fitness checks, then signed before being presented.
He joins training immediately and is available to Marco Silva for the new season. The Portuguese coach already knew the defender well and had wanted him since his Fulham days.
Lenglet ends his Atlético spell, where he had two years left on his contract. The move offers him stability and gives the colchoneros a share of any future transfer.
